Gayle Simons 1949-2012
During the final week of 2012 former students and friends of
Gayle Simons said their sad goodbyes to their beloved teacher and friend. Gayle, a life-long San Mateo county resident
and former nurse-educator, passed away on December 23rd after a
battle with cancer. She will be long
remembered by the members of the Peninsula Genealogy Community for her love of
genealogy and for her inspirational teaching.
She passed on not only her considerable genealogical knowledge but her
passion and enthusiasm for her subject.
She taught six genealogy classes a week at various adult education
programs in San Mateo and Santa Clara counties, and touched the lives of many
if not most of the local genealogical community. She kept her students on their toes. She knew how hard they had worked on their
families by what they shared with their classmates!! This was her gift as a teacher – to motivate
and inspire.
Gayle was an ardent supporter of Genealogical Societies and
a life member of San Mateo County Genealogical Society. She encouraged all her students to attend the
society programs, the monthly programs, the workshops and especially the
seminars featuring nationally-known speakers.
We will miss her support.
Gayle is survived by her husband Jerry and her two adult
children. They planned a rosary and celebration of her life
on Friday, December 28 followed by a mass of Christian burial at St. Matthew's
Catholic Church in San Mateo and burial at Holy Cross Cemetery, Colma on
Saturday, December 28th. The family
requested that donations in Gayle’s name be made to San Mateo Genealogical
Society or one of three other peninsula societies.
