Top 100 Genealogy Websites Used in 2012

By Dennis L. Maness, MLS

This is slightly off my usual post, but only slightly because it does involve genealogy. There is a company called Alexa that tracks what kind and amounts of traffic various web sites get. Another blog, GenealogyInTime Magazine; uses it to list the “Top 100 Genealogy Websites” each year. Here is their list for 2013.

Checking it I found that I use only 18 of the 100! Of course some are subscription sites that I can’t afford or are in or about other countries that don’t fit into my genealogy. But there are sites listed that I’ve not tried but just might be helpful in building my family history. I’ve now included some of these places in my New Year’s Resolutions.

How many do you use? And would they be good additions to your New Year’s Resolutions?

Have a Happy Genealogical New Year!

Peninsula Genealogists Say Farewell to Beloved Teacher Gayle Simons

Gayle Simons 1949-2012

During the final week of 2012 former students and friends of Gayle Simons said their sad goodbyes to their beloved teacher and friend.  Gayle, a life-long San Mateo county resident and former nurse-educator, passed away on December 23rd after a battle with cancer.  She will be long remembered by the members of the Peninsula Genealogy Community for her love of genealogy and for her inspirational teaching.  She passed on not only her considerable genealogical knowledge but her passion and enthusiasm for her subject.  She taught six genealogy classes a week at various adult education programs in San Mateo and Santa Clara counties, and touched the lives of many if not most of the local genealogical community.   She kept her students on their toes.  She knew how hard they had worked on their families by what they shared with their classmates!!  This was her gift as a teacher – to motivate and inspire.

Gayle was an ardent supporter of Genealogical Societies and a life member of San Mateo County Genealogical Society.  She encouraged all her students to attend the society programs, the monthly programs, the workshops and especially the seminars featuring nationally-known speakers.  We will miss her support.

Gayle is survived by her husband Jerry and her two adult children.  They planned a rosary and celebration of her life on Friday, December 28 followed by a mass of Christian burial at St. Matthew's Catholic Church in San Mateo and burial at Holy Cross Cemetery, Colma on Saturday, December 28th.  The family requested that donations in Gayle’s name be made to San Mateo Genealogical Society or one of three other peninsula societies.
